Portobello Road Market

One of the best ways to spend a Saturday in London, is browsing the stalls and shops of Portobello Road Market. It’s by far one of John and my favourite things to do. They is a huge selection of antiques, collectibles, vintage clothes, jewelry, and food, a long with new things, souvenirs and new clothes (I have bought some of my favourite dresses from a stall on Portobello Road). It’s also a great place to people watch because it is usually packed with all kinds of people from all over the world.

Unfortunately, it was grey, a bit chilly and rainy, but there are lots of places to go inside, so we still enjoyed ourselves. I took a ton of pictures too!

Tea at Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason is one of London’s oldest department stores. It opened in the early 1700′s and it is beautiful. It is best known for it’s amazing food halls, and for us it’s delicious Florentines. It’s hard for me to describe what a Florentine is, but I’ll try. It’s a delicious little carmelly cookie/cluster dipped in chocolate. We like the dark chocolate ones the best, and whenever we are in London we have to go stock up. We also managed to find some gorgeous lavender honey, and jams, and John got his favourite liquorice torpedos.

After a bit of shopping, we decided to have tea in the Parlour. I had a lovely peppermint tea, and I drank the whole pot!! And John had a raspberry cream soda. It was very…different.

After Fortnum & Mason, it was off to Harrods for more shopping! Another great day in London!

Back to London & Leona Lewis

On Wednesday we bid Stockholm farewell, and flew back to London. The Stockholm airport is huge, and very nice, but surprisingly dead. It seemed like there were no airplanes and next to no people. We got to our gate and for some reason it wasn’t open yet. We waited and waited, and finally an agent came and opened the gate at 3pm (our flight was supposed to leave at 3:25pm). The agent looked a bit frazzled and soon announced that the computer system was down so they were going to board our flight in a first come first serve, sit where there’s a free seat basis. Isn’t that ridiculous?!? I couldn’t figure out why they would do this, as everyone seemed to have a boarding pass. Airlines work in mysterious ways. Anyway, just as everyone made a mad dash for the front of the gate, they made another announcement that the compute system had miraculously started working, and thankfully they could board everyone like normal. Our flight ended up taking off about an hour late, but we made it!

Once in London, we boogied to our hotel, checked in, and it was off to the Royal Albert Hall to see Leona Lewis. John absolutely loves Royal Albert Hall, so any time there is anyone even remotely familiar, we try and get tickets and go see them. This time it was Leona Lewis. She was pretty good, but unfortunately for her we were starving, so we left a bit early.

I always feel bad leaving part way through a concert, but I was starving! Anyway, Leona put on a good show and has a beautiful voice, so I was very glad we went!

Stockholm Eats Part 2

So as promised, here are some more food pictures. We pretty much ate like Kings (& Queen) while we were in Stockholm, and by far our favorite place was the American Table in our hotel. The food was delicious!

The Real Reason We Went to Stockholm

So you may be wondering why exactly we chose to go to Stockholm. Not only is it a beautiful Scandinavian city that we both have wanted to visit, but it was also host to the International Ice Hockey Federation championships this year. Basically the world championships of hockey. When we started planning this trip, we were very excited as the NHL lockout was still going on, and we thought that if the season ended up being cancelled we would end up seeing some amazing hockey with a ton of hockey-starved NHL players. Well that didn’t quite work out the way we planned, as the NHL started up again, but we did end up seeing some good hockey games, and I think all the boys (John included) really enjoyed it. And there were still a few NHL players, but only the ones who’s teams didn’t make the playoffs.

John ended up getting us tickets for 3 games, and we had excellent seats for all of them. The Globe (the arena where the games were held) is only about 5 or 6  stops of the train away (all on the same line) from our hotel, so it was really quite convenient.

DSC_3266  We ended up getting there quite early for the first game, and the doors weren’t open, so we had to wait a while. But that was okay because the IIHF mascot, Icee, came and played with the boys. LOL

We saw Canada play Denmark (we won), then Switzerland (we lost), and then Norway (we won). All the games were a lot of fun, but probably the most excited one was against Switzerland as it was pretty close. We found that the Denmark fans were the meanest and the rudest, the Swiss fans sang and cheered through the entire game, and the Norway fans got drunk and funny and were extremely entertaining.
